Man's " to know of these people who risked their lives to save nother human bei. Man's papers in hand Edith fled to Munich There she met Werner Vetter Nazi party member who fell in love with her And despite her protests nd even her eventual confession that she was Jewish he married her nd kept her identity secretIn vivid wrenching detail Edith recalls life of constant lmost paralyzing fear She tells of German officials who casually uestioned the lineage of her parents; of how when giving birth to her daughter she refused ll painkillers fraid that in n ltered state of mind she might reveal her past; nd of how fter her husband was captur. ,
Ng who happened to be Jewish It is so well written that it lmost doesn t feel like memoir which can sometimes feel just like reiteration of events nd dates This is the story of n mazing woman whose strength nd resilience saved her life s well s her daughter s I love that her daughter convinced her to tell her story otherwise we would not have known bout this remarkable woman I m glad that we can remember her We said Heil Hitler In my soul s fastness I prayed Let the beast Hitler be destroyed Let The Americans nd the RAF bomb the Nazis to dust Let the German Army freeze t Stalingrad Let me not be forgotten here Let Someone remember who I really m What makes this memoir of n Austrian Jewish woman relentlessly moving is the ttention to detail the sharp incisive nature of Hahn s observations These elouently described details bring the narrative vividly to life The title is slightly misleading nd hints perhaps t cinematic melodrama which does this book disservice Her husband was painter blind in one eye nd thus spent most of the war working s kind of foreman in paint factory Only when the Nazis were on the verge of defeat nd desperate was he conscripted nd made n officer He is essentially good man not t ll synonymous with the term Nazi Officer She does brilliant job of portraying the constant terrors of being trapped in world where you re being hunted Most poignantly of ll she gets us to understand that everyone lmost lways has the choice of being kind or unkind no matter what the circumstances True to show kindness often takes courage but Hahn shows us that courage is no less part of our humanity than charity It s essentially n incredibly gripping nd moving story of kindness nd unkindness And s Hahn points out It was the individuals who made their own rules in many situations No one forced them to ct in n unkind manner The opportunity to ct decently towards us was lways vailable to them Only the tiniest number of them ever used it Wholeheartedly recommended I found this to be fascinating book I could hardly put it down I found the fact that highly educated woman successfully played n uneducated woman How difficult it much have been not to ccidently just say something or use words bove her station in life She lived day to day with the fear of being caught nd sent to concentration camp Edith only had one examination to take to receive her J D degree in law with extra training s judge She rrived to take the last examination nd was refused dmittance nd removed from the university because she was Jew from that moment on her life was in downward turmoil She was sent off to labor camp for Jews doing hard physical labor in the fields Before this she had never worked physically in her life On trip back to Vienna she took the star off her coat slipped way s she left the train nd passed s n Aryan She got papers from catholic friend nd moved to Munich where she worked s nurse s ide t Red Cross Hospital The only job she could get that did not check her papers gainst the National Registry was the Red Cross She did not want to get her friend in trouble so she had to stay out of sight She married Werner Vetter Nazi Party member She had daughter which made her popular woman with the Nazis Werner was captured on the Eastern Front by the Russians nd sent to SiberiaThe book is well written nd the description of daily life under the Nazis was interesting All of Edith s paper re t the Holocaust Memorial in Washington D C She resides in Israel It was her daughter that pushed her to tell her story The book is 330 pages long I read this s n e book on my Kindle pp for my iPad This felt like conversation with the uthor between only the two of us I loved it I loved how easy it read in that way Stories s personal s this re some of my favorites nd this is right near the top The photos the uthor included re stounding some of the words can even be made out The reader can ctually see lthough I couldn t read it the letter her husband had smuggled to her from Siberian prisoner when he was POW I think the biggest thing for me was how clear she made what her life was like Most Holocaust readers know what life was like in the camps even what life was like hidden in fields forests barns someone s hidden room But this may have been my first memoir bout person hiding out in the open I loved one part when fter the war she went back to get her papers changed nd she met the same man who had given her papers saying she was deutschblutig German blooded He was highly offended bout the fact that she had lied to him There is testament fter testament to the honor with which this woman livedlives She became judge fter the war which is where she had been headed before the war nd before the Nazi s put stop to it She was offered no pushed to judge Nazi cases nd she refused How does one do that I d have ccepted nd punished them with everything I had I can t imagine being so honest so duty bound that I would refuse I have n immense respect for this womanEdith s daughter was born during the war nd the way her husband cted on his return was hideous Apparently the Jewish blood was stronger nd overruled the German blood This makes no sense to me because weren t the Germans superior Wouldn t that made this the other way round Not to fit their crazy schemes He had wanted son I wonder if it would have been the same Would the sons Jewish blood had overridden the German What pity some people have these thoughts nd feelings I can t count ll of the times when I felt such sympathy for the uthor nd s I kept reading realized she didn t need it She has to be one of the strongest women to have ever lived She lived remarkable life nd we ll owe her nd her daughter debt of GRATITUDE THAT SHE S WRITTEN IT DOWN FOR US that she s "WRITTEN IT DOWN FOR US LEARN. " it down for us learn. Ed by the Russians nd sent to Siberia Edith was bombed out of her house nd had to hide in closet with her daughter while drunken Russians soldiers raped women on the streetYet despite the risk it posed to her life Edith Hahn created remarkable collective record of survival She saved every set of real nd falsified papers letters she received from her lost love Pepi nd photographs she managed to take inside labor camps On exhibit t the Holocaust Museum in Washington DC these hundreds of documents form the fabric of n epic story complex troubling nd ultimately triumphan. .
