Below are a series of common questions that will help you to get started so that you can begin using our feeds to get property updates via RSS.
RSS stands for "Really Simple Syndication" and is one of a host of web feed formats used to publish website content in a standardised format. An RSS document, sometimes called a 'feed' allows readers or subscribers to the 'feed' to receive timely updates from their favourite websites or in our case, from their preferred location or locations.
RSS is basically a structured data file (XML) and on it's own doesn't do much at all. RSS feeds work best when using an RSS reader which helps to display the raw data in the RSS feed in a way that's easier to read and manage.
Before you select an RSS reader you need to know whether you would prefer a web-based RSS reader or a desktop client. There are many free desktop client RSS readers available on the internet.
For those that prefer a desktop RSS reader, we recommend* KlipFolio Personal Dashboard for Windows (XP and Vista) users and NewsFire for Mac (OS X) users. If you prefer a web-based RSS reader, try Google's Reader which is also free and available on all platforms.
*Please note that you install any of the above applications at your own risk. We will not accept resposibility for any damage or loss of data that may occur, directly or indirectly, with your use of the above applications. We have used them without any problems but cannot make any guarantees for your own system.
If you have chosen a location that you would like to receive property updates for, copy the URL (the link e.g. http://propertyfeedslive.co.uk/location/london/rss/lettings/) to your RSS reader. Remember your RSS reader can handle multiple feeds, so add the feed for either lettings or sales (or both).
Provided you have configured your RSS reader correctly (normally there is next to no configuring required) you should begin receiving updates and notifications saying that there are new items in your feed (provided there are new properties in the areas for which you have feeds).
Open the feed in your feed reader to see the title of the property and a link (normally the title will be the link). Click the link to be taken to the property for further information.
If can't always be in front of a computer most modern mobile phones, PDAs and SmartPhones like the Blackberry or iPhone have the ability to read RSS feeds.
In some cases you may need to download additional applications to assist in the reading of the RSS feed on your mobile device. For further information please consult the manual that came with your mobile device.
Subscribing to an RSS feed is not the same as subscribing to a newsletter. With an RSS feed you can stop receiving updates whenever you need to by simply deleting our feed from your newsreader - that's it. Nothing more needs to be done after that.
